Preparation and Properties of Biobased, Cationic, Waterborne Polyurethanes Dispersions from Castor Oil and Poly (Caprolactone) Diol

Biobased cationic waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) were prepared using isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), N-methyl diethanolamine (N-MDEA), polycaprolactone (PCL) diol, hydrochlotic acid (HCl), and 1,4-butanediol (BDO). To improve the mechanical performance adhesive strength of polyurethane films, different amounts castor oil (CO) acting as a cross-linking agent incorporated in structure. The structures assessed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). combination CO had positive effect on dispersion stability properties WPUs. WPUs containing higher content demonstrated remarkable enhancement homogeneity among particles. stable aqueous was obtained even when N-MDEA loading low 3.2 wt%; bonus this hydrophilic moiety excellent strength, whose T-peel could reach up to 36.8 N/25 mm, about 114% than that WPU (17.2 mm) without any content. elongation at break CO7.40%-WPU 391%. In addition, fracture mechanism films transformed from brittle failure ductile fracture. experiment results showed CO-modified displayed film-forming property, flexibility, adhesion, which can be employed for constructing eco-friendly, biodegradable, cationic, polyurethanes.
